UPSC Exam Pattern 2024- Detailed Guide to IAS Exam Structure

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination (Prelims), Main Examination (Mains), and the Personality Test (Interview). Each stage tests different competencies and together they aim to assess the candidate’s overall suitability for a career in civil services.

UPSC Exam Pattern

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The Prelims consist of two objective-type papers:

General Studies Paper I

• Marks: 200
• Duration: 2 hours
• Syllabus:
• Current events of national and international importance.
• History of India and Indian National Movement.
• Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
• Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
• Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
• General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change.
• General Science.

General Studies Paper II (CSAT)

• Marks: 200
• Duration: 2 hours
• Syllabus:
• Comprehension.
• Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
• Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
• Decision-making and problem-solving.
• General mental ability.
• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level).

Note: Paper-II (CSAT) is of qualifying nature, and candidates need to score a minimum of 33% to qualify for the Mains.

2. Main Examination (Mains)

The Mains examination is descriptive in nature and consists of nine papers. The marks obtained in these papers are considered for the final ranking.

Compulsory Papers (Qualifying Nature)

• Paper A: One of the Indian Languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution (300 marks)
• Paper B: English (300 marks)

Papers to be Counted for Merit

• Paper I: Essay (250 marks)
• Paper II: General Studies I – Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society (250 marks)
• Paper III: General Studies II – Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations (250 marks)
• Paper IV: General Studies III – Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management (250 marks)
• Paper V: General Studies IV – Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude (250 marks)
• Paper VI: Optional Subject Paper I (250 marks)
• Paper VII: Optional Subject Paper II (250 marks)

Total Marks for Mains: 1750 marks

3. Personality Test (Interview)

• Marks: 275
• Nature: The interview assesses the candidate’s personality traits, such as mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion, and leadership skills.

Final Ranking

• Total Marks for Merit Calculation: 2025 (Mains: 1750 + Interview: 275)
